New customer focus for Tesco

The incoming chief of Tesco says the retailer will concentrate on maintaining its core proposition of ‘bending over backwards’ for customers as it attempts to grow its global business.

IT director Philip Clark, who stacked shelves in Tesco as a teenager and worked his way up to board level, will take over as chief executive next year when Sir Terry Leahy retires. 

“Some commentators have said we must have curvature of the spine from always bending over backwards for customers, this is our most important value and the core of our strategy,” said Clark in a video interview.
