Convergys, the customer service outsourcing specialist, is using text messaging to help recruit workers to its Philippines call centres.

Within two months of the system going live, Convergys has received 3,000 applications and referrals. 

Citing research indicating that the younger generation of workers Convergys is keen to attract are more receptive to SMS, Convergys allows applications to text the word APPLY to 2600, which then triggers a return message detailing how to proceed. The dialogue is maintained with Convergys texting candidates with interview times and other pre-employment requirements.

Social networking sites, especially Facebook and Twitter are also being used to attract workers. Demand for staff is especially strong in the Philippines, with Convergys recently stating that it is recruiting 4,500 workers over the next few months.

Sonny Divina, Convergys director of recruitment explains the appeal of these new channels. “Not only are these new media the most convenient form of communication as they allow applicants to reach us anytime, day or night, they significantly speed up the application process, effectively allowing employees to start a career with Convergys ‘in no time flat’.”
